Bollywood-The Cultural Climax...
Erica G. and Shivraj G. Section 1B4
There have been many changes to the bollywood we see today. Over the past 30 years, there have been changes that have permanently changed the way India is seen in the modern world. With dramatic changes, both physically (land) and emotionally (the new 'genre' Bollywood is aiming towards). India is soon to rise to the top, with scholar students and soon to be MIT applicants. India will be the center of the world for technology and academics, with America lagging behind.
Malika Sherwat (Modern Actress)

Ashwariya Rai (Modern Actress in Traditional Clothing)
There are many distinct ways to look at such a time period.
Modern vs. Traditional
Shown in these two pictures above are the very clear differences between modern Bollywood and traditional Bollywood. Back when Bollywood originated in 1896, people were much more respective of women and culture. Now, however, it is all about making money and it's all about exposing skin, in a not so traditional way, as shown above.
Religion
Secular: pertaining to worldy things or to things that are not regarded as religious, sprititual, or sacred. (NOW)
Sacred: devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose (THEN)
Bollywood has changed with the times; the more westernized India becomes, the more westernized Bollywood
becomes. Slowly but surely Bollywood is losing it's tradition to the obssession of wordly things, for example
money.
Social
The caste system is almost non-existant in the bustling industry of Bollywood. The role of women has stayed the same, both men and women are equal, but the way women are percieved now has changed dramatically because of westernization in
Bollywood. Dating and marriage did not matter in the olden days but now, dating is completely happen because of westernization and if you get married to a big star, you become a bigger star. The youth in India and the obedience of children has drastically gone down. For example, in most areas, children refuse to help their parents with day to day activites in order to go out with their friends. This is very common in the westernized India. Sports in India have pretty much stayed the same. They have also become the central idea for many Indian movies that have been released in 2008. For example, Chak De India (Go India!).This movie is based upon women's hockey that go to the world cup under the coaching of a shunned men's field hockey tournament champion. There are sports in India that have not changed and that westernization has not changed the way the sports are played or portrayed. The style and fashion has also changed through time with Bollywood. For example, the sari's have become more revealing like Ashwariya Rai's sari shown in the picture above.
Economics
The line of poverty has gone down and the development of India has gone up.
The rich just keep on becoming richer and the poor poorer. The industry of
Bollywood has not much say in how the poverty gap increases or decrease, but
they did about 30 years ago. Many of the stars of Bollywood in that time period
came from many poor and rural places. They often went back to visit and
donated large amounts of money to help put up schools and hospitals. Now, to
see a big Bollywood star do this is a very rare thing. They are hardly ever seen
outside of big cities, or without nice cars and private chauffeurs. They have
started to act like some of the self-centered celebrities in the United States.
Art, Language and Literature
The music has changed more from cultural to western. It has gone from sitar
to guitar. The dancing has changed in the style and look. What I mean by this is that the
dancing is more 'seductive' and the style/look is more modern and aimed towards a certain generation of people. Novels have been kept the same and are still centered around the same theme and genre.
Science and Technology
The science and technology has increasingly gone up in India. India has become the center of the world when it comes to telecommunications and computers. Transportations has been a main way many Indians go from one place to another. With the help of the British, the Indians developed some sort of system of railroads and subways and trolleys. Although there is much poverty in India, there is also a lot of wealth, with highly advanced technology and computers and enviable computer technicians. India is rising to the top very quickly and will be a country that no one can touch; they will soon be the center for everything, and America will fall behind.
Traditional...

VS.
Modern...

Just by looking at the pictures above, you can tell the traditional 'look' from the modern 'look'. Although the look may have changed in a different direction, the technoloy has improved greatly and is still expanding and taking over today.
Mock Dialogue
Traditional: Where has all of our land gone for cultivating crops?!
Modern: Oh, we are so sorry...we used up all that land to make corporations for our new computers and academy schools.
Traditional: Well, where are our farmers going to grow their crops...?
Modern: We'll give you a small square of land where you and your village can go and grow crops..that should do.
Traditional: I'm not sure that's enough, have you seen how much poverty there is? We need to supply all of our people with food and water.
Modern: It's okay, we have over a billion people, some will succeed, some will not. The best will rise to the top and hopefully go to a good college and support their family.
Traditional: What about the culture they leave behind?
Modern: It'll be with them...they just might forget about it for a while..but the important thing to remember is that we are succeeding and we are rising to the top, even though our culture may be lost.
Traditional: How will this help us in the long run?
Modern: Let's just see how things pan out, you never know.
Tradtional: Uh, okay...I'll just go and get lost now...
