Block 3 Question 2

Page history last edited by Ling Gu 3 mos ago

What rights should the colonists enjoy and what is the source of these rights?

Option 1

Colonists already enjoy all of the rights they should... however, due to their greediness, they do not feel

that all of their rights are enough. The British constitution should be all they need.

Option 2

The colonists should enjoy the rights of representation. For this to happen, a British-American

council should be formed. Each colony would have the power to run its internal affairs while the council would

have the power to pass laws and enforce taxes. The king and the Parliament would be the source of

these rights as the king would elect the council president and the decisions made by the council would

be approved by the Parliament.

Option 3

The colonists have the right to self-government, given that it acquires British consent. Within reasonable

bounds and without the intent to harm Britain physically or economically/commercially, Britain needs to

recognize the colonists' relative independence from the mother country. Britain is essentially aiding the

colonies in the early stages, teaching them the skills they need to be selfsufficient

later on. As long as Britain keeps an eye on the colonies, the colonies have the right to act independently and make their own decisions.

Option 4

John Locke stated that everyone had the god given rights of life, liberty, and security in their

property. The colonists had the right to overthrow a government where a social contract (aka those

natural laws were given to the colonists when they give up their liberties for protection) was violated.

The British unequivocally violated this social contract and thus the colonists have every right to rebel

and invoke a revolution.
