Block 3 Question 5

Page history last edited by Linda Liang 3 mos ago

What course of action does your option recommend that the colonies should pursue?

Option 1

We must try to repair our fraying ties to the British government before it is too late. We will continue to prosper and do well until British rule, and there is no need to change that. The radicals that started the rebellion should be stopped as soon as possible. All colonies should restore and strengthen the ties of loyalty to Great Britain, and obey all laws and taxes passed by the British Parliament without dissent.

Option 2

The colonies should pursue a peaceful compromise with Britain and should immediately stop all forms of resistance against the empire. We must reconcile with Parliament and assure the mother country that we are still loyal to Britain. We should also make a separate ruling body to govern the colonies; this ruling body should answer to the Parliament and to the king. We must put all thoughts of revolution behind us, and focus on being completely loyal to the colonies. A combined government party would help unite Britain with America and prevent any further disputes from being created.

Option 3

It is crucial that we continue to dissipate the passionate callings of some of our fellow colonists, the call for independence. This mustn't occur -- independence will undoubtedly cause the colonies' economy to suffer, leaving them in a state of both vulnerability and economic stress. By protecting our relationship with the mother country, it'll lay the groundwork for logical discussions, not passionate rebellion. However, we must continue to demonstrate courage and commitment in an effort to display our sense of violation, the inarguable fact that Britain has stepped on the rights that we are legitimately entitled to. Britain will realize their mistake and take steps to correct it, provided we drive them in the correct direction by remaining undeterred in our conviction. Constant and continual dissatisfaction will strike a chord with Britain, beginning the course to restoring our lost rights.

Option 4

Now two plates are rubbing together, causing friction and fire. Amidst this blur is the clarity of John Locke who is telling us our innate rights as human beings are being violated and we as Americans muzzled dogs vying to break these bonds. Britain continues to ignore change, the coming of the Enlightenment and democracy, and the paradigm shift towards capitalism and political correctness. Locke asserted that a government that violates the social contract of its people with taxation without representation, massacres, and taking away properties must be overthrown by the people. The British are trying to deny and obfuscate the growing hope in the inevitable, change. The growing power of the intellectual and middle class show that old laws are too inadaptible to an economy centered around human tendencies such as consumption rather than an evolution on the rather archaic and arcane fuedal system. The monarchy is no more as Enlightenment thought spreads and the time for Ezra Pound's words "make it new" are heard throughout the world.
