Block 4 Question 1

Page history last edited by Varun Matta 3 mos ago

What is the main cause of the present crisis and who is to blame?

Option 1

The main cause of the present crisis is the rebels and those who are protesting against the British. All of these issues are severing the ties with Britain and are leading the colonies down a path of no return. Why are the colonies even reacting so harshly to a few taxes when these taxes are repaid with many benefits, such as land and protection. Not only this, but Britain is taxed much more than the colonies, therefore it is immature to act in such a harsh manner. In addition, the colonies themselves were formed for moneymaking purposes, why would they be surprised by these taxes? The rebels are clearly the problem and must be stopped immediately.

Option 2

The main cause of the present crisis is that there is a lack of colonial representation in the British Parliament. Both the colonies and the British are to blame as Britain has taxed the colonies without their representation legitimately. However, during the French and Indian War, colonial legislation continued little to the war effort.

Option 3

The current cause of the crisis is the fact that the British are not giving the rights that the colonists feel they deserve.  So it is the British that are to blame fir the crisis.  They are the ones that are taking away the rights of the colonists, and they are the ones that are adding extra and unnecessary taxes on the colonists.  The colonists understand that they need to pay for their protection and government, but they feel that they are being overexposed and overused in the position that they are in.

Option 4

The main cause of the present crisis is Britian's unfair treatment and actions towards us that we find absolutlely unacceptable and unreasonable. We are not and will not tolerate being Britian's resource supply center. We are people too and our rights have been violated one too many times. Britian has been working only to improve and benefit themselves and overlooking all of our predicament. We have been unrepresented in every way. We have been taxed without representation and have been not been able to choose to fight against enemies that are Britain's not ours. Britain has used us Americans as a scapegoat through its harsh taxation and  abusing its power over America. It has imposed trade regulations that were meant to benefit Britain and not the colonies. We indeed try to heal our wounds with Britain, but they refuse to accept any compromise. We were not treated as British citizens and it is our right to become independent.
