Block 4 Question 3

Page history last edited by Teja Karra 3 mos ago

What relationship should exist between Britain and the colonies?

Option 1

Britain should always be the mother country. Britain is the reason the colonies are here. We should maintain our status as English subjects and keep our unique rights as subjects in the colonies. Britain supplies the colonies with great benefits and does not create too many problems for the colonies. If peace is to exist with the colonies, there would be much more prosperity and the colonies would continue to multiply and grow. Without Britain, the colonies shall be destroyed.  If we cut the umbilical now, there is no hope for our survival. The colonies need support from their mother, Britain.

Option 2

Britain and the colonies should exist in a joint relationship by means of a joint council with a representative from each of the thirteen colonies and a president appointed by the king. Laws could be approved by both the British parliament and the colonial representatives. This way, equal representation would exist between parliament and the existing colonists.

Option 3

The colonist believe that the relationship should be as if they were in the same country.  They  understand that they need to supply some income for the British in order for them to get protection and other needs, but they feel as if they are being overused as a source of money, and that they are almost turning into a slave of the Trans-Atlantic trade system, forced into buying or selling whatever produces the most money.  Quite frankly the British do not care so much as to their relationship with the colonist, only that they are making money for themselves, and that they have control over the colonist.

Option 4

The colonies should be completely independent from Britain. Britain needs us, but we do not need Britian. It is absurd for a entire continent to be governed by an island. Britan has crossed the line of reasonablility and used us as away of climbing out of the ditch they put themselves into. we are not meant for that reason for we are people and we seek our independence. We have matured and out country no longer needs it's mother. Our population and resources exceeds that of Britan and, so too protection is not needed as well. We seek no friendship or relationship with Britain except in that of trade.
